What's difficult about this trend of anorexia in tweens is that on the other side of the coin you have the dangerous trend of youth (and adult obesity). It is so hard to find a common middle ground that it is disturbing to us in the treatment industry.

Family members hope that after they bring their relatives or children into treatment for eating disorders or substance abuse issues, they come out as a “fixed” individual, free of their problems. Although my magic wand is prominently featured in my office, it isn’t the be-all, cure-all family members hope it could be.

Affecting a person both physically as well as mentally, eating disorders are very serious conditions. Those that have them generally attempt to hide their problem and that is probably the most difficult thing about diagnosing eating disorders.

A new term – "Drunkorexia" – has been coined that is used to describe that act of restricting how much is eaten so that a person can consume larger amounts of alcohol. In essence, Drunkorexia includes the combination of binge drinking and eating disorders – two very dangerous behaviors.
